THE SPIRIT OF EXCELLENCE

spirit of excellenceDr. Martin Luther King Jr said,

If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets as Michelangelo painted or as Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, “Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well”. [DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR]

In short he was saying, everything you do, do it with utmost excellence. The position you are in doesn’t really matter; what matters is how you perform your duties and responsibilities. If you apply excellence in your office messenger job, in your house keeping job people will identify you as the house keeper of excellence and not just an ordinary housekeeper.

So what is excellence?
Excellence is the quality of being extremely good in whatever you involve in. It could be in your studies, in your business, in your job, in your ministry, in your relationship with others etc. It is a distinction in terms of quality of how you execute your work and how others do it. If there are three boutiques in your street, what distinguishes yours from the other two?

Excellence is seeking God’s perspective before you engage in any kind of activity. Before you open your shop in the morning take some minutes to commit it to God, before you get into a relationship seek God’s perspective, when you seek Him consistently in everything you do, you will see that you stand out from everyone else in your field.

Spirit of Excellence as Portrayed in the Bible
God Himself is the Father of Excellence. When He had completed His work of creation, in Genesis 1:31; He saw all that He had made and it was very good. Every time you do something make sure you do it to your best such that, when you look at it, it shall be very good.

David is another example of a person who had the spirit of excellence in the bible. He shepherded his father’s sheep to the best of his ability. He protected them from lions and bears in the wilderness and when he became King he led Israel with that same excellence. Psalms 78:72 says, “And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led”. Wherever you have been given an opportunity to be a leader, do you portray excellence?

Mary took an expensive perfume, broke it and poured it on Jesus’s feet and wiped His feet with her hair. She did not just take any perfume but the most expensive. For her to reach the feet of Jesus, she must have either been kneeling down or lying prostrate which showed how humble she was. This is an example was excellence in giving. Do you give to God your best offering? If it is supporting or standing with friends in time of need, do you do it with all your heart?

Keys to Excellence

  • Value what you are doing. If you value something, you will do it with all your heart. Value your job, business, marriage, friends etc.
  • Do not settle for average, seek for the best. When you settle for an average thing, that means you don’t find satisfaction from it and in return you won’t do it in excellence. Don’t settle for an average business, job, relationship go for the best.
  • Pay attention to details. Carry out due diligence before you get involved with anything. This will make you ready for any challenges that might arise in the course of the activity. Ask questions before you get into deals, seek advice and then once you have all the details, give your best.
  • Display integrity. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Fulfill all your promises and be a person of your word.
  • Be consistent. A person with a spirit of excellence displays consistency in everything that he does. In prayers, in reading the word, in going to church, he displays consistency.
  • Make excellence your lifestyle. Purpose in your heart that you shall perform all your duties in excellence. David performed his responsibilities in excellence. He always sought God in everything he did and repented when he sinned. Even God testified and said, “I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do”.
